Over the past few years we have seen the growth of outsourcing and increasing the number of consultants from different types. The bad economy has accelerated the growth of business, as people realize that the jobs just are not there and start their own business instead. The government and many companies are considering outsourcing as a way to reduce overhead costs and the acquisition of services as needed.

Interestingly, none of the certification body or job qualification to become a consultant. You are a consultant, if we say that you are, and if someone is willing to pay you for your services.

Consulting something quite different. As a consultant, my goal is to improve the condition of my client. My focus is not on achieving concrete results, but the end result the client wants to achieve.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. The client decides what his company needs an emergency plan and decided to hire a consultant. The contractor approaches the project plan for the study and evaluation of the requirements needed for the production of the plan hours. Consultant understands that the actual production was not the plan, but increasing the company’s ability to respond to an emergency.

It can be very hard sometimes. After having lost a potential contract because the client felt that the organization asked them to do some work. They just wanted someone to review the plan to meet the administrative requirements.

A common misconception is that the consultant should always be an expert in a particular field. This is certainly true in many cases. However, especially when dealing with contractors, individual work with you can not have any real experience. They really can be experienced in a particular area, it is a retired emergency management, but this is not necessarily the experience nor any special training in consulting practice.

True consulting work is about relationships. That will create a single consultant over another is the level of confidence that the consultant brings to the customer. If you have the slightest doubt about the ethics of a consultant, or its ability to help you achieve the desired end state, get someone else.
